Welcome to Fifth Grade Math!!
What an exciting year in the development of your child. He/she is making the transition from the primary grades toward the intermediate level. Your student will tackle a broad range of new math concepts as we explore Fifth Grade Mathematics by Scott Foresman Addison Wesley. Some topics we will explore include place value and operations with whole numbers and decimals, data analysis with graphs and probability, plane and solid geometry, fraction concepts and operations, measurements, ratio/proportion/percent, and pre-algebra concepts.
Our math concepts and skills will include mental math, pencil/paper math, and calculator math. Problem solving and critical thinking will be an integral part of each chapter of study. Vocabulary will be stressed so that students can communicate in written and oral form to explain terms, procedures, and applications. Students will do group work, paired exercises, and individual practice.
Homework will be assigned every night (including some long –range assignments). Students will be expected to keep two notebooks: one with lesson concepts and skill examples and another as a vocabulary notebook. These will be graded. Frequent chapter quizzes, chapter tests, and cumulative tests including open-ended response items will assess mathematical development. This year students will also be completing assigned math essays each month to develop their writing skills within the content area. Activities and projects will apply what has been learned in the text. Computer online activities will reinforce classwork.
Learning lasts a lifetime! Have a wonderful year!
