In chapter 8 we will expand our knowledge of fractions. First we will learn to add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators. Then we will broaden these concepts to include mixed numbers. For multiplication we will use fractions, whole numbers, and mixed numbers and estimation skills. We will begin to explore the concepts involved in dividing fractions. In problem solving, this chapter will emphasize two strategies: working backward and choosing an operation. We will use fraction strips and grid models and relate fractions to decimals as well. After completion of our pencil and paper math skills we will introduce the use of a fraction calculator for performing all fraction and mixed number operations, reducing fractions to simplest form, and changing fractions to decimals etc. Applications to real life situations and careers will be entwined throughout our work.
